Analysis and clinical significance of venography findings in complications associated with peripherally inserted central catheters

چکیده
This study aimed to evaluate venous hemodynamic and morphological changes and associated factors in patients with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs), to provide evidence for rational clinical use of PICCs. Venography was performed at different time points in 87 patients with PICCs to observe hemodynamic, morphological, and structural changes. Related laboratory blood tests were also performed. Venous hemodynamic changes and structural abnormalities were observed in 77 patients following PICC placement, and blood tests showed significant changes. The effects of a PICC on hemodynamic and morphological changes are closely related to vein diameter, prothrombin time, fibrinogen level, and hemorheological parameters. Selection of larger peripheral veins and the use of measures that can modify hemorheological parameters, reduce fibrinogen level, and prolong the prothrombin time can reduce the incidence of PICC-related complications.

Pericardial Effusion in an Extreme Low Birth Weight Neonate with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter
Background: Pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are the rare complications of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC insertion) in extreme low birth weight infants. In this regard, paying attention to these complications is of utmost importance, because they can result in infant death. Case report: The case of our infant is a sa...

BACKGROUND The peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is increasingly used in protracted intravenous therapy. The device has several advantages for family practice, but its use has been chiefly described in nursing and interventional radiology literature. We investigated the use of the PICC in a family practice teaching hospital. METHODS Forty PICCs were inserted from 1993 to 1995 in 2...

ABSTRACT Aim. We sought to review studies regarding interventions to prevent or reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Background. CRBSIs are associated with peripheral and central intravenous catheters, including nontunneled central catheters, tunneled central catheters, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), totally implanted intravascular access devices (por...

Peripherally inserted central catheters are frequently used whenever reliable central venous access is required for a prolonged period of time. The objective of this study was to review utilisation profile, complication rates and outcomes of patients who were treated in our hospital with the therapy that required placement of the peripherally inserted central catheter. We reviewed the medical r...

Most hospitalized patients have placement of a peripheral venous access device, either a short peripheral catheter or a peripherally inserted central catheter. Compared with central venous catheters that are not peripherally inserted, the other 2 types are generally perceived by health care providers as safer and less complicated to manage, and less emphasis is placed on the prevention and mana...
